Dualling of Bottelary Road and extension of Saxdowns Road on the go

12 September 2024

This week the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, together with senior officials visited Bottelary Road and Saxdowns Road in Kuils River to see the progress made on the dualling of Bottelary Road between Amandel Road and Saxdowns Road; as well as the early construction phase of the Saxdowns Road extension from Langverwacht Road to Van Riebeeck Road. The dualling of Bottelary Road is due to be completed by the end of November 2024 and the extension of Saxdowns Road will be completed in the third quarter of 2025. This work forms part of the City’s Congestion Relief Management Strategy, which aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the Kuils River area.

‘I am quite pleased with the construction of a secondary carriageway on the southern side of Bottelary Road – here our teams have upgraded and widened Bottelary Road in order to achieve a dualled carriageway cross-section in both directions, including a road shoulder, this is to keep Cape Town moving. On Saxdowns Road, the contractor has commenced with the construction of a single carriageway between Langverwacht Road to Van Riebeeck Road. This extension of Saxdowns Road provides an important new link road between Bottelary Road in the north and Van Riebeeck Road in the south,’ said the City Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Roadworks are taking place between 07:30 and 17:30 on weekdays and on consecutive Saturdays when needed. The dualling of Bottelary road is due to be completed by the end of November this year. The extension of Saxdowns Road will be completed in the third quarter of 2025, if all goes as planned.

‘I urge road users to please adhere to road signs, as well as factor in longer travelling times while we are working on this project. We are doing all we can to minimise the impact on road users, and want to thank you for your support,’ concluded Councillor Quintas.

Beyond the extension and dualling of these roads, the improvements also include:
2,5 meter wide sidewalks on both sides of the dualled Bottelary Road carriageway
Construction of a bicycle lane along Saxdowns Road
Installation of a new traffic signal at the Van Riebeeck Road intersection
New street lighting
Installation of a large stormwater pipe along Van Riebeeck Road to the canal at Dumas Road
